Adding Payment Processing Fees and Discounts to Invoices

Pass on fees or incentivize customers to use a certain payment method with surcharges and discounts.

If you haven’t already, you can connect a payment gateway to begin allowing your customers the option to pay invoices online. Find instructions on how to integrate with a payment gateway here.

Getting Started

Once a gateway is connected, you will be able to set up fees and discounts for specific payment methods. Discounts and fees can be entered as a percentage, dollar amount, or both (i.e. 1% + $0.30).

Account Level

You can set your payment fees and discounts at the account level on the Payments page under Payment methods. Note that the Status can be toggled on/off, depending on whether you want to allow your customers to pay via that method. Click Save towards the bottom of the pages when you're finished.

Note: Amounts set at the account level can be overridden by invoice-level settings.

You can also set and modify your payment fees and discounts on the individual invoice level. Just open the invoice and scroll down to the Payment settings section on the right sidebar. Click Edit.

A modal will then open, and you'll be able to type in the surcharge in percentage and/or monetary amount. Again, here you can control which payment methods appear as options to the customer by checking the Status boxes. Click Update when you're done to save your changes.

The Customer Experience

Once your customer receives an invoice, they will be able to choose their preferred payment method from the list of available methods. 

Upon choosing a payment method, the invoice total or remaining balance will be automatically adjusted to account for any discounts or fees.  After choosing a method, customers can click Pay to continue with the payment process.

Paid invoices and invoice receipts will have the payment fee listed at the bottom of the invoice in the summary table.

Syncing Fee Data with Stripe

Details about the payment discounts and fees will also be added to the Stripe payment metadata.
